The ABC is an innovative inclusive Five-day camp that brings together in and out-of-school vulnerable adolescent girls (Majority are girls at risk/survivours of FGM and Child marriage) from FGM-prevalent communities under a controlled environment for capacity building, life and vocational and skills acquisition, empowerment self-defense, networking, mentorship as well as provision of quality and age-appropriate sexual reproductive health and rights information. Cohorts of adolescent girls are provided with accurate and age-appropriate information on harmful practices, sexual and reproductive health, rights, child marriage, and advocacy training using a fun and participatory learning approach model.
At the end of the camp, girls are named Anti-FGM champions and join an alliance of Girls Movement Against FGM.
They also receive reporting tools and a toll-free number where they can document their interventions ranging from fortnight school club meetings for in-school girls to community outreaches for out-of-school girls. The champions are subsequently attached to locally recruit trained mentors who also participates in all camp activities as volunteers.
Overall, The Adolescent Boot Camp (ABC) is designed to address the urgent need to accelerate efforts toward the elimination of female genital mutilation by empowering girls with information and skills to resist FGM, influence peers, and lead communities to End Female Genital Mutilation.
The camp is registered as an activity that can be implemented across Africa and can be adapted build capacities of adolescent girls in different context including humanitarian settings.
