The Why of our Mission

BACKGROUND

As we approach the UN-SDG 2030 target year, it is important to note that the burden of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) on health and socio-economic resources of the nation can only be reduced when more intentional advocacy measures to, not only intensify sensitization and awareness, but also target communal behavioral changes and community adaptation of anti-FGM systems. According to the World Health Organization, if no action is taken to prevent FGM, the associated loss in health costs would be more than 50% by 2050.

To prevent this impending loom brought about by inadequate action against FGM/C, the role of young people (especially teenagers) is of an essential importance, while engaging in anti-FGM/C community adaptation advocacy. Besides the fact that today’s generation of young people are certain to be the future drivers and stakeholders of systems put in place today, they are also significantly affected by these systems.

These startling figures are eye-openers to the crucial and urgent need to enlighten teenage girls on the harmful effects of Female Genital Mutilation, how it impinges on their sexual reproductive health and rights; build and empower a network of anti-FGM/C champions who are willing to advocate against FGM/C, train other women and girls to be advocates as well as report intending cases of FGM/C in their local communities, thus reducing the risk of another girl being cut.
