Alima Quadri - 17 Years

My name is Alima Quadri.

I’m a 17years old girl and a student of community special basic school Oke Ora Ogbomoso.

I was born crippled from birth, I was a girl that my family almost forgot about my existence, they were pushed with external pressure to put me into school , I was seen as a liability and was just hoping someday, someone will at least get me pregnant so I can stop being a burden to my parents.

I did not believe in myself and I have a low self-esteem due to my disability.

I thank God for the VFN invitation to come for the boot camp, am hap py that our teachers gave me the opportunity to be selected as one of the participant. The boot camp made me realize that my disability isn’t an end.

The boot camp is the first place I will be after my school that I was not stigmatized but was shown love instead and my needs were prioritized. The Boot camp made me realize what gender based violence is and how I can defend myself from being a victim even with my disability, I was told to yell, and speak out when anyone tries to take advantage of me or my disability.

I also learnt how to make beads (Vocational skills), and I will start selling the beads to my friends in my neighborhood. The boot camp also create an Esteem in me, I am proud of who I am and what I will become in life. One sister spoke to us about “ability in disability” on our last day in camp. She is very bold. I hope to be like her one day.

Oduola Sharon - 14 Years

My name is  Oduola Sharon.

I am 14years old I am an SS2 student of GOF International High School Osogbo Osun state.

My advocacy journey started in 2021 when I attended the adolescent boot camp and I participated in an Art competition organized by VFN and I won, the competition gave me an opportunity to attend a global adolescent conference in Abuja which gave me my first flight experience.

Ever since then I have been advocating against FGM, I initiated a Girls’ Hero Club in my school under the supervision of two of our teachers where we meet to talk about issues related to our reproductive health and also develop advocacy strategies to End FGM. One of our project was our visit to 2 secondary schools to talk to the girls about female genital mutilation and how they are an agent to advocate against FGM.

I was opportune to be one of the young facilitator at the adolescent boot camp 2022, I thank God, UNFPA and VFN for giving me the opportunity to inspire the participants that they can use their voices to End FGM in their school and their community.

During my holidays or breaks VFN usually give me the opportunity and platform to volunteer for some of their community project workshop to end FGM.

In my advocacy journey I have been able to impact over 200 girls in schools and osun state community

I am looking forward to more platforms to do greater exploits and ensure a zero FGM by 2030.
